You know how it is – after many years, your home seems to have become an extension of your family. Every crack in the plaster, every piece of furniture, has its stories. Might the same be true of the longtime home of a “chosen family” – say, an ever-changing group of every age and disposition, who have stood on the same stage for decades? Strangers who became family by bringing theater to life right in the heart of their community? You bet! For 40 years, Meadville Community Theatre has made its home in the Oddfellows Building at Allegheny College. Those walls have witnessed countless acts of collective creativity, born of curiosity, talent, hard work, and bit of chutzpah. But beginning in September of 2025 the everyday magic of MCT will take place elsewhere.
Our new home will be located at Cussewago Square, the emerging cultural center that is the brainchild of developer, Rob Smith. Thanks to his vision, the space that once housed seven buildings comprising the Race Street Lumber Company is being renovated to provide homes for, among other things, a theater complex, an art gallery and studios, and several eateries. However bittersweet the move, the prospect of taking our place among such neighbors is simply thrilling.
MCT offers not only classic dramas, comedies and musicals, but also new and original works, spoken word performances, and cabaret evenings. Imagine having the ability to expand our reach to audiences from other parts of our region, who may be discovering not just MCT, but Meadville itself. What an opportunity!
As we figure out the nuts and bolts of the move to this stunning new space, our spirits are soaring. So, stay tuned as we roll up our sleeves to ensure a wonderful future for MCT at Cussewago Square. And know that, as ever, all will be welcome in our new home!
