MCT is incredibly fortunate to have many friends at Allegheny College and one of our best is Beth Watkins. From a simple idea, Beth agreed to direct this unique but challenging production. We could not be more thrilled with the result.
A Brief Bio
Beth is delighted to return to MCT to direct Light in Odd Spaces. She previously directed Circle Mirror Transformation, Dancing at Lughnasa, and The Dining Room. Recently retired from Allegheny College, Beth enjoys travelling, yoga (at the wonderful YogaSpot on Chestnut St) and seeing all the theater available to the Meadville Community! Creating this production about the Odd Fellows building with this company has been a very rewarding experience.
I also asked Beth, “How did you develop a play, from scratch, about a building?”
Working with this company on Light in Odd Spaces has been amazing. Several of us have worked together over the years, but this is the first time we’ve all been on the same project. In trying to imagine what a play about a building would look like, the company members interviewed many different people who’ve worked, lived, or played in the building over the last 50 years. The stories we’ve heard, and the discoveries we’ve made, have changed how I think about Meadville’s history and the contributions of so many to the community. It has been fun to learn about the history of the Odd Fellows, to explore the nooks and crannies of this intriguing building, and to watch the actors bring those ideas to life on stage. The original songs for the show deepen our comic and poignant sensibilities; it has been a rich mix of life experience, creative imagination, and theatrical style which has led us to the performance you will see.
